CHAPTER TWELVE

Cole ejected the pistol’s magazine, checked to make sure it was full, and then drove it home again.

“You’re sure that’s necessary?” Callaway asked, arching an eyebrow at her.

“I hope not. But we need to be ready for anything.”

Cole did not relish the idea of a shootout at the bar, and she intended to do everything within her power to prevent one. But she also knew it would be foolish to enter that bar unprepared, especially after being warned that Harry Vollmer might not come willingly with them if they decided to take him in for further questioning.

The Open Tap Saloon sat on a dusty lot across from a gas station just off the highway. Several of the gas station’s pumps displayed “OUT OF ORDER” signs, and the bar didn’t appear to be in much better shape. The dumpsters were overflowing with garbage, the exterior paint was peeling, and several of the letters in the neon sign failed to glow.

Despite these drawbacks, however, as many as twenty motorcycles stood in the lot, along with a few cars and trucks. The sight of the bikes made Cole uneasy, reminding her as they did of another bar she’d gone to not that long ago, a bar where members of the Cali Clowns had nearly cornered her in a hallway, which would almost certainly have led to her death.

She just hoped she wouldn’t find any members of the Clowns here.

She started to open her door, but Callaway stopped her with a hand on her arm.

“Hold your horses, partner,” he said. “What’s the plan?”

“The plan?”

“Yeah, the plan.”

Cole was surprised by the question. It seemed straightforward to her.

“The plan,” she said, “is to make sure nobody gets killed.”

“Which sounds very noble. But how exactly do we do that?”

She paused, staring through the windshield as a man with a leather vest and tattooed arms stepped out of the bar and moseyed over to one of the bikes.

“We’ll smile and say please,” she said.

Callaway stared at her, unimpressed. His eyes said, Really? Is that all you’ve got?

Finally, she sighed. “I’ll have backup on speed dial, alright? Beyond that, all we can do is try to contain the situation—and watch our backs.”

Callaway did not seem particularly satisfied with this answer. He frowned, staring out the window.

“Do you have any other suggestions?” Cole asked with a touch of impatience. She was on edge, in part because of the warning about Harry’s friends, and she didn’t want to wait around any longer. The sooner they went into that saloon, the sooner they could find this Harry fellow and figure out if he was their unsub.

Callaway stared out the window a few moments longer. Then a change came over his face, as if he had just thought of something. He grunted to himself.

“What?” Cole asked, puzzled. “Something you want to share?”

“I have an idea for how we can make ourselves stand out a bit less,” he said. “Just follow my lead, will you?”

Cole did not enjoy being kept in the dark like this, but before she could ask Callaway what he meant, he opened his door and stepped out.
